Hair Loss Myths

Discuss – The myth – Some ethnic groups are less prone to experience hair loss.

Unfortunately there are people out there who try to take advantage others. Especially when it comes to exploiting any insecurity one may have. There are companies out there who will try to get around the letter of the law to sell hair loss treatments that do not work.

It is important to remember that the government regulates advertising for products that purport to grow new hair. The only FDA approved hair loss treatments are Rogaine and Propecia. As such, they are the only companies that can legally advertise that they stimulate hair growth.

Other companies out there will try to lead you to believe there products work the same, or better, as Propecia and Rogaine. Their advertising can be vague, or if it purports to actually re-grow hair, it may be in fact illegal advertising. Do not fall for their misleading statements.

The most common form of misleading advertising is to state that a product is specifically for people with thinning hair or who are balding. They do indicate that it will actually re-grow hair, but they lead you to believe that hair stimulation will occur. This form of advertising is not technically illegal. They are allowed to sell a product to people with hair loss even though the product most likely will not work.

Discuss – Another common reason that results in hair loss is use of bleaches, relaxes to color hair for fashion and style. It is often seen that hair becomes ‘soapy’ in texture and easily breaks off after use of such chemical stuffs.

Advertising becomes illegal when the company makes a formal statement that their product will re-grow new hair. This form of advertising is commonly seen on the internet or in email spam. Believe it or not, because this form of advertising is on the internet, and not on TV or radio, it may not be illegal.

If you are going to purchase any hair growth treatment product, always check to see if the product is FDA approved. You should almost never buy anything off the internet that makes any type of promise without doing your own thorough research. A doctor can usually provide the best advice on products for you.

Discuss – The myth Hair loss can only happen after you turn 50.

Think you know what causes hair loss? Don’t believe everything you hear. You may be falling for some old wives’ tales that have only grown thanks to the internet. Make sure your facts are straight before trying to take hair loss on.

Myth 1 – Hat’s That!

Since the days of old, men have believed that their hair loss is influenced by how often they wear hats. The standard believe is that a hat stops air from getting to your hair. This results in hairs that suffocate. Other versions blame hair loss on the oil that gets trapped on your scalp by hats.

This is simply not true. Unless you hat is so tight it is stopping blood from getting to your scalp, feel free to wear one as often as you like. A hat is even beneficial when your hair starts to thin since it stops the sun from damaging your scalp.

Myth 2 – Mommy Made Me Do It!

As fun as it is to blame your male pattern baldness on your mother, it’s just not accurate. The age old myth is that your mother carries the genes that caused your hair loss.

In reality, genes from both your mother and father contribute to your lack of hair. So pass some of those vengeful stares over to your paternal grandfather as well.

Myth 3 – Too Much Gel, Hair Goes To Hell

Nope. You can slosh that hair spray and mousse on all you want. The product is just coating the outside of your hair and does nothing to the actual follicle. While a greased up hairdo may not yield the healthiest looking (or fashionable) hair, it’s not going to cause any thinning.

Discuss – Telogen effluvium – this is regarded as the second most common cause of women’s hair loss and this is unsurprising given the nature of the condition. Telogen effluvium is characterized by a general thinning of the hair and is usually brought about as a result of some traumatic event causing sufficient stress to interfere with the normal hair growth cycle.

Myth 4 – Blame It On Work

Stress is frequently blamed as a cause of hair loss. In extreme cases, this may be true, but stress is never a cause of male pattern baldness.

Stress may cause you hair to come out in clumps or stop growing, but it won’t trigger that beautiful hairdo so many men are sporting. So don’t use your hair loss as an excuse for that vacation!
