Menopause and Hair Loss

Discuss - The myth People who do not suffer from hair loss have no shedding of hair at all.

The onset of menopause can often lead to hair loss and has long been a part of aging that many women fear the most. These days many more women are also experiencing thinning and bald spots as they mature, and both men and women are reaching out for new solutions. Even though there is no real cure’, there are many things that can be done to help.

Both hormones and genes are to blame for menopause causing acute hair loss, as is the aging process. Confirming the causes of your loss with a competent and experienced dermatologist is the first step in determining your best treatment options.

It’s possible to have temporary loss of hair caused by physical stress, emotional stress, thyroid abnormalities, medications and hormonal changes (such as androgens and estrogens during menopause) normally associated with females. Tension on the hair by prolonged use of hair weaving or corn rows can also cause permanent loss.

Discuss - Alopecia areata - this is the third most common hair loss condition to affect women. It is characterized by patchy areas of hair loss on the head or it can be more widespread over the body.

There are autoimmune disorders such as Alopecia Areata that cause patchy loss of hair often in small circular areas in different areas of the scalp. Alopecia Totalis is a total loss of hair on the scalp and is considered an advanced form of Areata. Alopecia Universalis is total hair loss of the entire body. People with diseases such as diabetes and lupus have also reported losing hair as a result.

Discuss - Always seek the advice of your physician before undergoing a hair loss treatment regime.

It’s normal to shed some hair each day as about 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time during a normal phase that lasts for 2 to 6 years at one time. Some women notice they are losing hair about 3 months after delivering a child. This is related to a hormone loss and is usually temporary.

Several medicines have been known to cause hair loss such as blood thinners (anticoagulants), medicines used for gout and in chemotherapy to treat cancer. Also, the use of vitamin A, birth control pills and antidepressants has been known to cause hair loss.

Male pattern baldness is usually inherited from your genes. An over abundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is an active form of testosterone, within the hair follicle can create this type of hair loss. Current medications are aimed at slowing this common type of baldness including Minoxidil which is commonly called Rogaine and is available without a prescription. Both men and women can apply this product to the scalp. Another medicine, Finasteride, and called Propecia is available in pill form without prescription but is meant only for men. It can take up to 6 months in order to tell if these medications are helping.

Discuss - Dong Quai A Traditional Chinese herb that contains phytoestrogens that reduces the formation of DHT. Hence, Dong Quai is beleieved to stop hair loss and even regrow hair.

Remember, the onset of menopause can often lead to hair loss and has long been a part of aging that many women and men fear the most. Even though there is no real cute, there are many things that can be done to help. Select the Hair Loss Doc Shop to locate a doctor near you.

How to Conceal Hair Loss Following Pregnancy

Discuss - Another way that female baldness differs from that of males is that females tend to experience bald patches at different places on their heads or a general thinning of the hair. Women are better able to cover up bald patches and often wear stylish wigs that are indistinguishable from natural hair.

Many women suffer from gradual or sudden hair loss after pregnancy, known as Postpartum Alopecia.

Hair loss after pregnancy is seen at different times; it can occur after parturition or after nursing ends. It has been known women to startle women when they see clumps of their hair coming out during a shower or brushing their hair. But it is normal to experience hair loss after pregnancy- up to six months to a year after childbirth.

Hair loss after pregnancy is primarily due to the simple fact that a woman’s body prefers nourishing the newborn rather than her hair.

Discuss - Hair pulling: Also known as trichotillomania. Unlike other types or hair loss this is not a medical but more a psychological disorder.

What happens is this: usually, around 85-95% of your hair is in the growth stage at any time, but hormonal changes during pregnancy encourage an increase in the percentage of hairs in the growth phase. Consequently, many women benefit from thicker hair during pregnancy, as more hairs than normal are growing and a smaller amount than normal are shedding.

There are numerous hair styling techniques suitable for new mothers. One of the options for keeping hair attractive is using a volumizing tonic. These types of treatments are water-based and alcohol-free. To use, shower, towel dry your hair, then spray the tonic 3 times on the aides and top of your head, bend over and spray another few shots at the underneath of your hair. Style as usual and expect good volume, shiny hair.

Discuss - Don’t despair, there’s often a simple explanation for excessive hair loss and even hereditary loss or male pattern-type baldness can be treated successfully for most people nowadays.

Another idea to correct hair loss after pregnancy is to go for a better cut or new hair style. Some women prefer to get a shorter haircut or one that involves less maintenance. Consider having a few highlights woven in around your face line to highlight facial features.

You can choose hair accessories such as temporary hair extensions that can be taped with a special kind of tape right onto your existing hair. The temporary hair extensions last for several days and then can be safely removed with a solution that comes with them.

By adopting these styling tricks, temporary hair loss after pregnancy can easily be handled and attending any evening event with your new born is a breeze. And rest assured that your hair’s growth cycle will usually return to normal within a year after the birth of your child.
